What year did you graduate? (Or what year would you have graduated?)
1999
What do you do now?
Philosophy...seriously. And I'm still in school! Went to Atlanta to apprentice with the Atlanta Ballet for a year after graduation, but realized quickly that it wasn't for me. Plus, while attending Oglethorpe up there for a year, I took a bunch of physics courses and one philosophy course and decided that of all the things I could do to make money, I would choose the one in which I would make the least, naturally.
So, I returned to Jax and finished my BA at UNF in 2002, started grad school at University of South Florida in 2003 as a teaching assistant in the philosophy department, and earned an MA in philosophy and an MA in applied linguistics in May of 2007. This past year, I have traveled the world presenting research, some funded by the European Science Foundation (you can see one of the projects here: http://www.philosophy.ucf.edu/pcs/basic.html) and am now settled back in Tampa writing a dissertation (or supposed to be anyways). My main interests are in the philosophy and science of consciousness, embodiment, technology and gender. My dissertation deals specifically with the malleability of embodiment and cognition, particularly with gendered and transgendered bodies.
I teach courses at University of South Florida, University of Tampa, and Hillsborough Community College, mostly in philosophy, sometimes English as a second language. For fun, I pretend to train for triathlons, although I have yet to do one...I mostly swim open water marathons around Florida.
Hope to catch up with some of you as I have lost contact with all the HS crew and now hang with a bunch of academics, which, although fun in its own way, can be tedious ;) My email is mindasbrain@hotmail.com or you can skype me at michele.merritt (as a weirdo philosopher, naturally, I have boycotted all forms of myspacing)
As for my pics below, the first is from Taiwan, then me and my beau, Mike, at various gatherings, Zoe and me in Scotland during a conference, then me and Andy Clark, one of my dissertation members from Edinburgh (we are at a bar in Edinburgh in the pic) then the dogs on a camping trip, then pics from San Marino (a super small country landlocked in Italy I was just at for a conference), and then some more Taipei pics, Taipei 101, me and some Taiwanese philosophy students, etc.

Wow! And here I am signing up my oldest daughter to start at nancy dance. I have two more who are going to First Baptist for preschool and VPK. Philosophy is so wonderful. I'm back in school to earn a degree to teach high school english. I kind of postponed college. Wow really again on the crazy great life...You look so happy!
Not remember you?? I couldn't forget you if I tried and believe me, I try. No, but seriously, it's good to know that I drank so heavily while in high school that someone would think I wouldn't remember them. Some things never change!
We sooooo need to catch up! Where are you parents living exactly? I ask b/c there was one day this summer I swear I saw you at the Walgreens in Ponte Vedra, but I wasn't sure it was really you so I didn't say anything. . . and I thought you had moved away so I was very confused lol
But it's late and I'm tired, getting ready for back to school stuff, so I'll e-mail you and we'll catch up, but I did want to say hi and I'm so glad we found each other again!
My email is txshortstufff@aol.com so keep an eye out okay?
Later slacker!!
Yep its me, so good to hear from you. Congrats on all of your research and travels. I am married and I currently live in Newport, RI...we are moving to San Diego in a year.
ha! Yah I remember in your lil white car..then we got behind some semi w. a busted tire and it was flinging tire particles at your windshield. Congrats on all ur success! You look awesome =)
Yes, those were the days. I still think of you when I have a Sobe! So glad to see you on here and that things are going so well. I'm sad to say my philosophy degree is doing very little in my dance career, so maybe I can live vicariously through you . . . .
Hey Michele!
It's so good to see you! I remember the last time we saw each other was a party at your house a year or two after graduation. ; ) So glad to see you are doing well. I think of you often. You've done some really neat things!!!
Right now I'm at what passes for the beach in Texas and I just freaked my boyfriend out because I shrieked when I saw your name in my email. Every so often I've tried to track you down, but to no avail... I think about you every time I'm in Jax-- late nights of assling, "the moon is made of cheese," downtown is star wars, etc etc.
I actually recommended to our social studies teacher that she try to find "The American Reader" to use in class, and a part of me died inside because no one in the vicinity would have understood if I yelled out "corntang."
My email is sara.kathryn@gmail.com or sarahawkins@manornewtech.org . We must email.
